The language issue
Given that communication is fundamental to the doctor-patient relationship, Les mots pour parler des maux : lexique différentiel des termes acadiens liés à la santé is intended to narrow the linguistic gap between patient and doctor in order to make communication between the two individuals easier.
The book is the result of a research action project entitled “Interaction patient-professionnel de la santé en vernaculaire acadien du Nouveau-Brunswick”, which was carried out from 2004 to 2007. It was supervised by Gisèle Chevalier, then director of the Centre de recherche en linguistique appliquée at the Université de Moncton, at the invitation of Dr. Fernand Arseneau (MD, LMCC, Dip. Sports Med.) from the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont Hospital in Moncton, NB. The authors used a two-pronged approach: Gisèle Chevalier compiled the Glossaire acadien de la santé, while Lise Rodrigue put together the Lexique differentiel des themes reliés à la santé. Both are included in Les mots pour parler des maux.
